Idioms In Common

Idioms are an important part of any language. Learning idioms in different languages give much insight into that culture. Though English and Lao differ greatly in both language and culture, we both use idioms in similar situations. Here are four common idioms in English that have counterparts in Lao:

  3. Here are some of the idoms. I am not very good with the translation, tough I think it is pretty close.
    1. ຊ່າງມືມັນຍາກ ຊ່າງປາກມັນງ່າຍ - easier said than done.
    2. ໄວບປາກເສັຽສີນ ໄວຕີນຕົກຕົ້ນໄມ້ - To abstain from false speech must one must have the ability to be clear minded, focus and be in the present and knowing what and when to talk.
    3. ອົດສົ້ມໄດ້ກິນຫວານ ອົດຄ້ານໄດ້ເງິນຄຳ - success is the result of patience and hard work.
    4. ໄກ່ງາມຍອັນຂົນຄົນງາມຍອ້ນແຕ່ງ -A magic touch of the brushstroke and the red lipstick can transcend an ordinary woman beautiful and a beautiful woman unforgettable.
